Analysis of the moisture effect on the mechanical behaviour of an adhesively bonded joint under proportional multi-axial loads ArchiMer
Arnaud, N.; Creac'Hcadec, R.; Cognard, J. Y.; Davies, Peter; Le Gac, Pierre-yves.
The objective of the study is to identify the 3D behaviour of an adhesive in an assembly, and to take into account the effect of ageing in a marine environment. To that end, three different tests were employed. Gravimetric analyses were used to determine the water diffusion kinetics in the adhesive. Bulk tensile tests were performed to highlight the effects of humid ageing on the adhesive behaviour. Modified Arcan tests were performed for several ageing times to obtain the experimental database which was necessary to identify constitutive models. A Mahnken-Schlimmer type model was determined for the unaged state according to a procedure developed in a previous study. This identification used inverse techniques. It was based on the unaged modified Arcan...

Assessing the performance durability of elastomeric moorings: Assembly investigations enhanced by sub-component tests ArchiMer
Gordelier, T.; Parish, D.; Thies, P. R.; Weller, S.; Davies, Peter; Le Gac, Pierre-yves; Johanning, L..
The growing marine renewable energy sector has led to a demand for increasingly compliant mooring systems. In response, several innovative mooring tethers have been proposed demonstrating potential customisation to the stiffness profile and reduced peak mooring loads. Many of these novel systems utilise materials in a unique application within the challenging marine environment and their long term durability remains to be proven. This paper presents a multifaceted investigation into the durability of a novel polyester mooring tether with an elastomeric core. Laboratory based functionality tests are repeated on tether assemblies following a 6 month sea deployment. Results show a 45% average increase in dynamic axial stiffness. This is supported by high...

Calla lily inflorescences postharvest: pulsing with different sucrose concentrations and storage conditions Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Almeida,Elka Fabiana Aparecida; Paiva,Patrícia Duarte de Oliveira; Lima,Luiz Carlos de Oliveira; Silva,Franklin Cordeiro; Fonseca,Juliana; Nogueira,Denismar Alves.
Calla lily is an appreciated specie used for flower arrangements. In spite of its commercial importance, there is little information on calla lily postharvest conservation. Thus, this study aimed to determine the best sucrose concentration for pulsing and cold storage conditions to extend calla lily postharvest durability. Flower stalks were submitted to a pulsing pre-treatment using 2, 4, 8, 12 and 16% sucrose in the solution, for one hour, plus a treatment with direct storage in cold chamber (4ºC), without a prior-treatment. Dry storage or storage in solution with the commercial product Flower® was also tested. A completely randomized design was used with four replicates and three inflorescences per plot. Spathe length and width were daily measured from...

Durabilité des géotextiles aramides en milieu alcalin ArchiMer
Derombise, Guillaume; Van Schoors, Laetitia; Davies, Peter.
Because of their high initial properties, aramid geotextiles have been used for a decade for ground reinforcement. Today, the geotextiles manufacturers think about their use in alkaline grounds. However there are few data on the long-term behaviour of aramid fibres under these conditions. Consequently, a durability study in a basic environment has been carried out in order to improve understanding of the degradation mechanisms involved in ageing. On that purpose, the physico-chemical characteristics as well as the surface state and the mechanical properties of the Twaron 1000 fibres have been followed at different ageing times.

Durability of the first combined antiretroviral regimen in patients with AIDS at a reference center in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, from 1996 to 2005 BJID
Ribeiro,Flávia Andrade; Tupinambás,Unaí; Fonseca,Marise Oliveira; Greco,Dirceu Bartolomeu.
Finding a better first antiretroviral regimen is one of the strategies used to improve span and quality of life of HIV/AIDS patients. 891 patients were followed during 24 months or until interruption/abandonment of treatment, changing regimen or death. At the end of 6 months, 69% of the patients were still being treated with the first regimen, 54% at 12 months, 48% at 18 months and 39% at 24 months. AZT-3TC-EFV was the most prescribed regimen and with the lesser discontinuation. NNRTI regimens showed high effectiveness and durability compared to PI regimens. Irregular medication dispensation was the only risk factor for failure/interruption of treatment in multivariate analyses. Intolerance/adverse effects were mainly responsible for first regimen...

Effect of some operating parameters on the performance of a pelleting press CIGR Journal
Okewole, Oyewole Titilope; Igbeka, Joseph.
One of the major challenges of fish pellets production at the micro and small scale level is the principal complement of equipment necessary for the local manufacture of the same. Imported fish pellets are quite expensive and unaffordable for the average fish farmer. Hence, the need to be able to produce fish feed at a lower cost yet achieving the objective of quantity and quality expected of pelleted feeds are paramount to the viability of the enterprise. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of some operating parameters (moisture content of the compounded feed, die speed of the press, and the feed rate) on the pelleting efficiency, throughput capacity, pellet durability and pellet bulk density and to optimise the conditions. Three moisture...

Environmental degradation of composites for marine structures: new materials and new applications ArchiMer
Davies, Peter.
This paper describes the influence of seawater ageing on composites used in a range of marine structures, from boats to tidal turbines. Accounting for environmental degradation is an essential element in the multi-scale modelling of composite materials but it requires reliable test data input. The traditional approach to account for ageing effects, based on testing samples after immersion for different periods, is evolving towards coupled studies involving strong interactions between water diffusion and mechanical loading. These can provide a more realistic estimation of long-term behaviour but still require some form of acceleration if useful data, for 20 year lifetimes or more, are to be obtained in a reasonable time. In order to validate extrapolations...

IS SOCIAL CAPITAL REALLY CAPITAL? AgEcon
Robison, Lindon J.; Schmid, A. Allan; Siles, Marcelo E..
Social capital in the past two decades has emerged as a dominant paradigm in the various social science disciplines. However, its adoption by the different social science disciplines has led to multiple and often conflicting definitions of social capital. Some differences in the definition of social capital can be explained because scientists have included in the definition expressions of its possible uses, where it resides, and how its service capacity can be changed. This paper defends the social capital metaphor by pointing out that social capital has many important capital-like properties including service potential, durability, flexibility, substitutability, opportunities for decay (maintenance), reliability, ability to create other capital forms,...

Life time prediction of polymer used as thermal insulation in offshore oil production conditions: Ageing on real structure and reliability of prediction ArchiMer
Le Gac, Pierre-yves; Choqueuse, Dominique; Melot, D.; Melve, B.; Meniconi, L..
Polymers are widely used for passive thermal insulation coatings on steel pipe in offshore oil and gas production. In this industry, structures used in deep sea have to be reliable as they are in service for more than 20 years in a very severe environment: sea water, hydrostatic pressure, temperature. One of the main questions is how to test and predict the lifetime of such structures in the laboratory. This study presents one approach that has been developed to characterize and predict the degradation of polyurethanes used as thermal insulation materials. Based on results obtained during accelerated ageing of the PU in sea water, a prediction of degradation through the thickness has been set up taking into account the temperature profile in the coating,...

Prediction of long term strength of adhesively bonded steel/epoxy joints in sea water ArchiMer
Bordes, Melanie; Davies, Peter; Cognard, J. -y.; Sohier, L.; Sauvant-moynot, V.; Galy, J..
This study is concerned with the development of a tool to predict the long term behaviour of adhesively bonded steel joints aged in sea water. First, diffusion kinetics and the mechanisms governing the degradation of mechanical properties of an epoxy adhesive are described. These two sets of data were used in a Coupled finite element (FE) analysis to determine the stress state in double lap shear (DLS) specimens before and after aging. However, subsequent tests on DLS specimens indicated an adhesive and not cohesive failure mode, so this approach could not be used to predict failure in the present case without introducing an interfacial damage parameter. A second approach was therefore employed, in which modified Arcan samples were designed in order to...

THE USE OF SISAL FIBRE AS REINFORCEMENT IN CEMENT BASED COMPOSITES AGRIAMBI
Tolêdo Filho,Romildo Dias; Joseph,Kuruvilla; Ghavami,Khosrow; England,George Leslie.
ABSTRACT The inclusion of fibre reinforcement in concrete, mortar and cement paste can enhance many of the engineering properties of the basic materials, such as fracture toughness, flexural strength and resistance to fatigue, impact, thermal shock and spalling. In recent years, a great deal of interest has been created worldwide on the potential applications of natural fibre reinforced, cement based composites. Investigations have been carried out in many countries on various mechanical properties, physical performance and durability of cement based matrices reinforced with naturally occurring fibres including sisal, coconut, jute, bamboo and wood fibres. These fibres have always been considered promising as reinforcement of cement based matrices because...
